Q: What exactly is tiddlyURL and what does the site do?
The site is a quick and free to use URL shrinking service. It takes a long URL and
returns a shortened version. An example may help.
Enter the following large URL as input:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/videogames/14218901/ref=pd_ts_vg_
nav/104-3999407-6026346
The TiddlyURL will be:
http://www.TiddlyUrl.com/yr5ltx
I know which one I find easier to cut and paste or communicate with a friend/relative
over the phone.
Q: Why would I want to make a URL smaller?
Well sometimes smaller is definitely better. A small URL is more user/computer friendly.
A lot of forums or email clients can incorrectly format a long URL. This may cause
broken links. This is much less likely with a smaller URL. Another use is to create a
link to a specific web page/product and the passing on the tiddlyURL to the person who
will be visiting the page/buying the product. This would help to reduce errors by the
user browsing to the wrong page/product. This comes into its own when communicating
URLs on the phone.
Q: Is a tiddlyURL unique and will it expire?
Yes a tiddlyURL is unique and the link will never expire.
Q: What is a URL?
You being serious? If so its an acronym (this means a shorter word that means a longer
word) that stands for Uniform Resource Locator. It is often used interchangeably with
URI which means Uniform Resource Identifier. http://www.google.com is a URL. These
can become a bit cumbersome when they are longer - hence the need for TiddlyURL.
Q: I have some great ideas for additions to the TiddlyURL service, what shall I do?
Please visit the Contact Us page and email your suggestions/feedback
Whilst the TiddlyURL team can't guarantee a reply, we will try our hardest.
Q: Does TiddlyURL offer a preview URL service?
Yes, you can simply click on the Tiddly preview button or prefix an existing URL with a
question mark. i.e. if you wish to create a preview link for the TiddlyURL at the top of
this page then you would use http://www.TiddlyUrl.com/?yr5ltx. This will redirect the user
to a preview page outlining what URL the user will be redirected to and automatically
forward them after the default 5 seconds.
Q: Is their anyway to change the 5 seconds forwarding for TiddlyURL previews?
Not currently. However this in on the to do list. We will probably allow times between 5-20
seconds to be specified.
Q: Can I have a link that shows the preview but doesn't automatically forward the user?
Not currently. However this in on the to do list and will be done in the very near future.
Q: Can I link to TiddlyURL?
